Why recycle plastic?

Recycling statistics are based on tonnage. But the real problem with plastic is the volume.

Collecting domestic - post consumer- waste plastic is expensive because the plastics itself is very light and a lorry load of it would be mostly air.

Even when baled the payload of any vehicle comes nowhere near its capacity

Most plastics recycling at the moment is the commercial collection of only one type of plastic (post industrial as opposed to post consumer) or just bottles, for expensive processing or combining all plastics together for incineration.

Most of which is shipped away to the Far east.

Given that plastic is derived from OIL and is a scarce natural resource that is wholly unsustainable and unsatisfactory. Plastic is the most versatile raw material that we posses - on which we have a tremendous dependence and is the most recyclable material we possess. The environmental impact of our demand for oil has created some of the worlds worst environmental disasters at great cost both economically and environmentally.

EKKO has an approach that differs from others in that there are clear solutions to the most prohibitive aspects within recycling post consumer plastic and are currently demonstrating that problems can become solutions by combining reprocessing with manufacture and education. we have created viable local solutions to the 3 most prohibitive aspects of recycling plastic, which are:

3 Problems, and the solutions

Weight: Collecting what is essentially fresh air - we ask people to bring the plastics to us, whilst they are in town

Cleanliness: The (dirty mixed contaminants) require energy to clean dry it - we ask people to clean it before they bring it down, along with the rest of the washing up.

Mixed Types:

With literally thousands of mixed polymers all with unique characteristics that do not mix readily and requiring  intensive sorting - we sort by hand at the factory using a simple but effective method.

EKKO use simple low tech equipment and have enabled the development of a unique plastic recycling process which has drawn attention from across the UK and further.

We believe we have a viable solution to the problem of plastics recycling which can be easily replicated.
